Wasgamuwa National Park is a vast and biodiverse wilderness sanctuary situated primarily in the Polonnaruwa and Matale districts of Sri Lanka. Unlike the more crowded wildlife parks, Wasgamuwa offers an off-the-beaten-path safari experience characterized by its untouched forests, wilder elephants, and rich historical heritage, making it a highly desirable Polonnaruwa tourist attraction for true nature lovers.

The park’s name, derived from the Sinhala Walas Gamuwa (meaning ‘The Wood of the Sloth Bear’), hints at its incredible biodiversity. While it is one of the best places to see wild elephants in Sri Lanka in large, magnificent herds (sometimes over 150 strong), the park is also one of the few places where you have a chance to spot the elusive Sri Lankan Sloth Bear and the highly sought-after Sri Lankan Leopard.
