Nainatheevu Nagadeepam

Nainativu, also known as Nagadeepa, is a small but profoundly sacred island located off the coast of the Jaffna Peninsula. This island holds immense religious significance for both Buddhists and Hindus, making it a unique and powerful pilgrimage destination in Sri Lanka. The name “Nagadeepa” means “Island of the Serpents,” a name that alludes to the ancient Naga people who inhabited the island and worshipped serpent deities.

The island is home to two of the most revered religious sites on the island:

  • Nagadeepa Purana Viharaya: This ancient Buddhist temple is one of the sixteen holiest Buddhist shrines in Sri Lanka (Solosmasthana). According to ancient chronicles, it is the site where the Buddha, five years after his enlightenment, visited to mediate a dispute between two warring Naga kings over a gem-studded throne.
  • Nagapooshani Amman Kovil: This is a beautiful and highly venerated Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Nagapooshani Amman (a form of Parvati). It is considered one of the 64 Shakti Peethas (shrines dedicated to the Hindu goddess of power), and its towering gopuram (gateway tower) and vibrant carvings are a magnificent sight.

A visit to Nainativu requires a short but scenic boat ride from the Kurikadduwan Jetty (KKD) on the mainland. This journey adds to the spiritual and adventurous nature of the visit. Once on the island, a peaceful walk or a short tuk-tuk ride connects the two temples, allowing visitors to experience both sacred sites and witness the remarkable harmony between these two faiths.

Why go?

Standing proudly on the shores of the Jaffna Lagoon, Jaffna Fort is the second-largest Dutch fort in Sri Lanka and a powerful symbol of the island’s layered colonial past and its journey to peace. Originally built by the Portuguese in 1618, it was later captured and extensively rebuilt by the Dutch in the 17th century, who gave it the distinct pentagonal shape and impressive fortifications that are visible today.
