Kande Viharaya Buddha Statue
Richmond Castle is not an ancient fortress but a magnificent Edwardian-era mansion built between 1900 and 1910 near Kalutara, embodying the extravagant wealth and cosmopolitan tastes of the early 20th-century Ceylonese elite.
The Man and the Mission
The mansion was the country seat of Mudaliyar Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardena, a wealthy and influential landowner, philanthropist, and chief local administrator under the British Crown. His ambition for the house stemmed from a visit to his schoolmate, the Maharaja of Ramnad in India. After being refused the palace’s architectural plans (allegedly with the insinuation that Ceylonese craftsmen couldn’t handle the project), the Mudaliyar secretly commissioned local architects to sketch the design, determined to prove them wrong.
Architectural Marvel of East Meets West
The result is a dazzling, hybrid creation that blends:
- Indian palace architecture (its core inspiration).
- British Edwardian aesthetics (resembling a stately English manor).
- Elements of Roman-Dutch and Greek styles.
The two-story, 16-room structure is a testament to luxury:
- 99 Doors and 34 Windows: All frames were crafted from teak wood imported from Burma (Myanmar).
- Global Materials: It features floor tiles from Italy, stained glass windows from Scotland, and a magnificent double-winged staircase made of carved teak.
- Advanced Engineering: The highlight is the unique, almost air-conditioning-like, ventilation system in the dance hall, which channeled cool air from the nearby Kalu Ganga river through underground ducts.
A Poignant Legacy of Philanthropy
Despite his immense wealth and the lavish wedding to his aristocratic wife, Clarice, the couple was tragically unable to have children. This unfulfilled yearning is immortalized in the property’s design:
- The gardens contain marble statues of infants placed specifically to be visible from the Mudaliyar’s bedroom window.
- Following the annulment of his marriage and his deep grief, Don Arthur de Silva Siriwardena devoted his later years to philanthropy.
In his final act of charity, he bequeathed Richmond Castle to the Public Trustee with the explicit request that it be converted into a children’s home and educational centre for the underprivileged. This is the castle’s function today, creating a moving contrast between its grand, palatial past and its humble, humanitarian present.
