Jaffna Fort
Standing proudly on the shores of the Jaffna Lagoon, Jaffna Fort is the second-largest Dutch fort in Sri Lanka and a powerful symbol of the island’s layered colonial past and its journey to peace. Originally built by the Portuguese in 1618, it was later captured and extensively rebuilt by the Dutch in the 17th century, who gave it the distinct pentagonal shape and impressive fortifications that are visible today.
The fort has witnessed centuries of conflict, from colonial power struggles to its central role in the Sri Lankan Civil War. After years of being a key battleground, it is now being painstakingly restored with international support. A visit to the fort offers a unique and sobering glimpse into this history. You can walk along the massive ramparts, explore the ruins of colonial buildings like the King’s House and the Dutch church, and imagine the battles that took place here.
The fort’s strategic location also provides stunning panoramic views of the Jaffna Lagoon and the surrounding landscape, making it a popular spot for photography, especially during sunrise and sunset. While parts of the fort remain under the control of the Sri Lankan Army, it is open to the public as a key tourist attraction in Jaffna, inviting visitors to reflect on the past and witness the ongoing process of renewal and healing in the Northern Province.
