Dutch Fort

Standing as a significant historical landmark in Batticaloa, the Dutch Fort is a testament to Sri Lanka’s colonial past and its strategic importance as a trading hub. Originally built by the Portuguese in 1628, the fort was later captured by the Dutch in 1638, who gave it the name it bears today. It then fell under British rule in the late 18th century, with each colonial power leaving its own unique mark on the architecture and character of the fort.

Located on a small island within the Batticaloa Lagoon, the fort is a square structure with four bastions, bordered by the lagoon and a canal. While some parts of the fort show the signs of age and conflict, it remains an evocative site. Visitors can explore the grounds, walk along the ramparts, and see old cannons that still stand guard. The fort’s interior currently houses various government administrative offices, but it is open to the public to explore
