Kandy Lake
Nestled in the heart of the bustling hill city of Kandy, Kandy Lake is a serene and picturesque man-made lake that provides a tranquil escape from the urban energy. Also known as Kiri Muhuda or the “Sea of Milk,” this iconic landmark was built in 1807 by the last king of the Kandyan Kingdom, King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, next to the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.
The lake’s perimeter is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a jog, offering stunning views of the surrounding hills, lush greenery, and the city’s charming colonial and traditional architecture. Visitors can admire the “Walakulu Bamma,” a decorative, cloud-shaped parapet wall that partly encircles the lake and remains an unfinished testament to the kingdom’s history. The small island in the center, with its palm trees, adds to the lake’s picturesque quality and is steeped in local folklore.
Kandy Lake is not just a beautiful sight; it’s a central part of the city’s spiritual and cultural life. It serves as a beautiful backdrop for the world-famous Kandy Esala Perahera festival, and the sacred Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is located right on its shore. A boat ride on the tranquil waters is another popular activity, providing a unique perspective of this Kandy tourist attraction.

This was not our first time going to here. It is a great place to shop not too far from Europe. We took the bus from Port Authority and traveled through the countryside to get there.
This is the best tour on the east coast! It was amazing how many places we visited and what great memories we made!
