Origin of the Name (Legend)
The name “Bakers Bend” is steeped in local lore, with the most widely accepted story tracing it back to Mr. Samuel Baker, the famous British explorer and planter who is credited with founding Nuwara Eliya.
According to the legend, while Mr. Baker was traveling on horseback along the winding estate road, his horse suddenly slipped and tragically fell off the cliff at this sharp curve. Grieved by the loss of his animal companion, he had the bend intentionally crafted into the distinctive horseshoe shape to permanently commemorate his horse.
