Andagala Viharaya and Andagala Mountain
Andagala Mountain (often referred to as ‘Eel Rock’ due to its shape) is one of the seven iconic rock outcrops that encircle and provide a dramatic backdrop to the historic city of Kurunegala. This region, which served as the royal capital of Sri Lanka during the 13th and 14th centuries, is famous for these unique geological features, each named after an animal it is said to resemble in legend.
Perched on or near the summit of this rock is the Andagala Viharaya, an ancient Buddhist temple with roots stretching back centuries. Like many rock temples in the region, it holds deep historical and spiritual value, often containing ancient caves, ruins, and religious artifacts that speak to the area’s significance during the era of the Kurunegala Kingdom. The temple offers a peaceful setting for reflection and worship.
A trek up Andagala Mountain is a rewarding experience for any visitor to the North Western Province. The climb provides a chance to explore the natural environment and is rewarded with a stunning panoramic view of the Kurunegala city, the surrounding plains, and the other famous rock formations like Ethagala (Elephant Rock) and Ibbagala (Tortoise Rock). It is a perfect spot for nature lovers, history enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a great Kurunegala viewpoint.
