Ancient City of Polonnaruwa
The Ancient City of Polonnaruwa is a monumental and captivating archaeological site in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As the island’s second capital from the 11th to the 13th centuries, Polonnaruwa flourished under kings like Parakramabahu I, evolving into a sophisticated city and a center of power and religious art.
The ruins offer a spectacular glimpse into a golden age, showcasing an incredible fusion of ancient Sinhala and South Indian architectural styles. Key attractions include the impressive remnants of the Royal Palace Complex of King Parakramabahu, once seven stories high, and the elaborate Sacred Quadrangle (Dalada Maluva), which houses the island’s most concentrated collection of religious structures. Among these are the beautifully preserved circular relic house, the Polonnaruwa Vatadage, and the towering, brick-built image house, the Lankatilaka Vihara.
A masterpiece of rock carving and a highlight of the site is the Gal Vihara (Northern Monastery), featuring four majestic Buddha statues—seated, standing, and reclining—carved from a single large granite cliff face, celebrated for their artistry and serene expressions. The city’s advanced engineering prowess is evident in the vast artificial reservoir, the Parakrama Samudra (‘Sea of Parakrama’), which still serves the region’s agriculture today.
The Ancient City of Polonnaruwa is an unmissable part of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, offering a profound journey through a well-preserved medieval kingdom where grand religious monuments, royal splendor, and ingenious civil engineering co-exist amidst a serene, sprawling archaeological park.
