Lover’s Leap Waterfall
Lover’s Leap Waterfall (Pem Sihina Ella in Sinhalese) is a beautiful, 30-meter cascade nestled in the heart of the Nuwara Eliya tea country. Far from the vast scale of World’s End, this waterfall offers a more intimate, accessible, and historically rich natural escape, steeped in a poignant tale of forbidden love.
💔 The Poignant Legend of Lover’s Leap
The waterfall draws its name from one of the most enduring and tragic pieces of local folklore in the Hill Country:
Legend tells of a Royal Prince who, while hunting in the jungles of Nuwara Eliya, lost his way. He was rescued and guided back by a beautiful village maiden. During their journey, the two fell deeply in love. However, due to the rigid social customs and class difference, the Prince’s parents strictly forbade their union. Heartbroken and defiant against a lifetime of separation, the two young lovers climbed to the top of the cascade and leapt to their deaths together, choosing to be eternally united in the afterlife rather than be separated in life.
Today, the cascading water is often described as the endless tears of the star-crossed lovers. Superstitious locals sometimes avoid the area at night, believing the couple’s spirits still haunt the forest.

The Trek Experience

Just before reaching the main falls, you may encounter a Shiva Shrine built against the rocky façade, adding a spiritual element to the natural beauty.
💧 Best Time to Visit and Essential Tips
- Peak Flow: The waterfall is at its most powerful and photogenic during the wet season, generally from October to January. Visiting outside this period (during dry spells) may result in a gentler trickle.
- Combine Your Visit: The waterfall is located in close proximity to the Pedro Tea Factory. It is highly recommended to combine your morning visit to the falls with a tour and tasting at the nearby factory.
- Safety Advice:
- Wear Grip: The rocks and paths near the water can become very slippery, especially after rain.
- Watch for Leeches: As with most hikes in the wet, verdant Hill Country, carrying salt or insect repellent is advisable for dealing with leeches.
- No Swimming: For safety and hygiene reasons (due to the water being used for drinking), swimming or bathing in the pool at the base of the falls is prohibited.

Why go?
The mansion was the country seat of Mudaliyar Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardena, a wealthy and influential landowner, philanthropist, and chief local administrator under the British Crown. His ambition for the house stemmed from a visit to his schoolmate, the Maharaja of Ramnad in India. After being refused the palace’s architectural plans (allegedly with the insinuation that Ceylonese craftsmen couldn’t handle the project), the Mudaliyar secretly commissioned local architects to sketch the design, determined to prove them wrong.
