Gregory Lake

Often referred to as the heart of Nuwara Eliya, Gregory Lake is not a natural body of water but a vast, picturesque reservoir built during the British Colonial era. Situated amidst the stunning hill country, this man-made lake quickly became the center of social and recreational life in “Little England,” transforming a swampy bog into a thriving recreational and engineering marvel.

The Governor and the Power Mission

The lake’s creation dates back to 1873, authorized by the then British Governor of Ceylon, Sir William Gregory (after whom it is named).

The initial purpose was purely pragmatic:

  • Reclamation: To drain the swampy terrain in the valley bottom of Nuwara Eliya, making more land available for the town’s expansion.
  • Power Generation: Crucially, the water from the newly formed reservoir was directed through an underground tunnel to a hydro-power station at Blackpool. This station was vital in providing the town with its first source of electricity, a testament to colonial engineering.

Later, in 1881, the reservoir was stocked with Rainbow Trout by the local Government Agent, C. J. R. Le Mesurier, cementing its recreational status alongside its utilitarian purpose.

Features and the Charm of Colonial Recreation

Spanning over 225 acres (91 hectares), Gregory Lake is surrounded by beautifully maintained parkland and paved walkways, reflecting the manicured aesthetics of a British country park.

  • Scenic Backdrop: The lake provides stunning views of the surrounding mist-covered hills, often serving as a landing and take-off point for seaplanes connecting Nuwara Eliya to Colombo.
  • Architectural Heritage: Its banks are lined with charming old structures and summer huts, offering glimpses of its colonial past as a place for water sports and leisure among the British elite.
  • Recreational Hub: Today, the area is a vibrant hub for tourists and locals alike, offering a wide array of activities:
    • Boating: Paddle boats (including the iconic swan boats), motorboats, and rowboats.
    • Land Activities: Pony rides along the shore, cycling, and leisurely walks on the paved pathways.
    • Picnics & Leisure: Dedicated picnic spots and food stalls make it a perfect family destination.

Why go?

The mansion was the country seat of Mudaliyar Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardena, a wealthy and influential landowner, philanthropist, and chief local administrator under the British Crown. His ambition for the house stemmed from a visit to his schoolmate, the Maharaja of Ramnad in India. After being refused the palace’s architectural plans (allegedly with the insinuation that Ceylonese craftsmen couldn’t handle the project), the Mudaliyar secretly commissioned local architects to sketch the design, determined to prove them wrong.
