Kalutara Bodhiya
The Kalutara Bodhiya is one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred and visually striking Buddhist complexes, a twin landmark of profound spiritual and historical significance located spectacularly at the gateway to the Southern Province, where the Kalu River meets the Indian Ocean.
It is comprised of two primary, must-see sites: the ancient Sacred Bodhi Tree and the distinctively modern Chaitya (stupa).
1. The Sacred Bodhi Tree (Kalutara Bodhiya)
The spiritual heart of the complex is the Sacred Fig Tree (Ficus religiosa).
- Ancient Heritage: This tree is revered as one of the 32 saplings of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura, the world’s oldest documented tree, which is itself a descendant of the tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment in India. Its planting is traced back to the 2nd Century BC, on the instructions of Arahant Mahinda Thera.
- Symbol of Resilience: The tree survived the colonial era, standing defiant even as the site was converted into a fort by the Portuguese and later used for administrative offices by the Dutch and British. In the 19th century, public protest was instrumental in preventing its removal for the construction of the railway bridge, cementing its role as a symbol of Buddhist heritage and perseverance.
- Ritual of Safe Passage: A unique and widely practiced custom is for travellers, particularly those driving to or from the South, to stop, make a small offering, and pay homage to the Bodhi Tree to ensure a safe journey and receive blessings.
2. The Unique Hollow Stupa (Kalutara Chaitya)
Opposite the Bodhi Tree, on a small hill overlooking the river, stands the magnificent white, spherical Kalutara Chaitya (Gangatilake Vihara).
- Architectural Marvel: It is one of the world’s few entirely hollow stupas. Its impressive dome, with a diameter of over 30 meters, was constructed as a thin-shell structure using the country’s first computer for its complex calculations—a blend of ancient faith and modern engineering.
- The Interior: Visitors can enter the stupa to perform puja (worship). The inner chamber is a peaceful, cool space adorned with 74 vibrant murals that vividly depict the most important stories from the life of the Buddha and the Jataka tales. Four smaller stupas are placed within the larger structure.
- Deposited Relics: The stupa contains sacred relics of the Buddha, making the entire structure a holy shrine.
The entire complex, managed by the Kalutara Bodhi Trust established by Sir Cyril de Zoysa, offers a serene environment for reflection, making it one of Sri Lanka’s most visually stunning and spiritually significant places to visit.
