Henarathgoda Botanical Garden

Henarathgoda Botanical Garden, located in the Gampaha District of Sri Lanka, is one of the island’s most historically significant and verdant low-country botanical gardens. Established by the British in 1876, this 43-acre (17.4-hectare) sanctuary is internationally renowned as the birthplace of the rubber industry in South and Southeast Asia.

The garden’s founding purpose was to conduct experiments on exotic economic plants. Its climate, which was found to be similar to the Amazon basin, led to it being chosen for a pioneering endeavor. In 1876, nearly 2,000 seedlings of the Para rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis), grown from seeds smuggled out of Brazil and propagated at Kew Gardens, were planted here. The ensuing successful harvest led to the distribution of rubber seeds from Henarathgoda to other British colonies, including Malaysia, India, and Myanmar, permanently changing the global economy. Today, the remnants of the first rubber plant are protected as a National Monument, and the garden still hosts the towering largest rubber tree in Sri Lanka.

Beyond its historical significance, Henarathgoda is a major centre for botanical research and conservation. It features a diverse collection of approximately 2,000 plant species, including indigenous and exotic varieties from tropical climatic zones across the world. The garden is thoughtfully divided into several thematic sections for visitors to explore:

  • Orchid Garden: Featuring numerous species, including a rare specimen of the Queen of Orchids (Cattleya).
  • Palm Garden: Housing a large collection of diverse palm trees.
  • Japanese Garden: Offering a peaceful, landscaped retreat.
  • Medicinal Garden: Showcasing plants used in traditional remedies.
  • Educational Garden and Children’s Park.

The garden’s tranquil environment, bordered by the Attanagalu Oya (river), is a popular destination for nature lovers. It is also a thriving ecosystem, home to an estimated 80 bird species (including endemics), 18 species of mammals (such as the Sri Lankan flying squirrel), and numerous butterflies and dragonflies. Furthermore, the preserved Old Henarathgoda Railway Station stands as an archaeological site, offering a glimpse into the colonial-era infrastructure built to support the early scientific research at the garden.
