The Shrine of Our Lady of Matara (Mathara Matha)
The Shrine of Our Lady of Matara is a revered Roman Catholic church in the town of Matara, Sri Lanka, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is one of the island’s most important pilgrimage sites, drawing devotees of all faiths, and is celebrated for its miraculous, centuries-old statue of the Madonna and Child.
Unique Features and Significance
The shrine’s prominence stems from the mysterious origins and miraculous history attributed to its central icon, which has become a powerful symbol of faith and resilience for the community.
The Miraculous Statue (Mathara Matha):
- Mysterious Origin: The centerpiece is a statue of the Virgin Mary holding the Infant Jesus, believed to be carved from a single piece of wood and patterned after 17th-century Portuguese sculpture. Church officials assert it is approximately 400 years old. Legend holds that Matara fishermen found the statue inside a large wooden crate hauled from the sea off the coast of Weligama, miraculously unharmed by the seawater.
- Triumphs and Returns: The statue’s history is marked by extraordinary events:
- Cholera Epidemic: It is credited with ending a severe cholera epidemic in the district after being carried in a solemn procession.
- Lost and Recovered: It has been lost, damaged, and miraculously recovered on multiple occasions throughout its history, including a dramatic episode during a restoration attempt in Belgium.
- 2004 Tsunami: The shrine was severely damaged and 24 people died while attending Sunday Mass during the 2004 Asian Tsunami. Remarkably, the statue was later recovered by a visitor, washed ashore about 400 meters away, with the Infant Jesus’s crown still intact, an event seen by devotees as a testament to the Virgin Mary’s protection.
Pilgrimage and Annual Feast:
- Religious Hub: The shrine is a major center of Marian devotion, attracting Catholic pilgrims from across Sri Lanka and beyond.
- Annual Feast: The most significant event is the Annual Feast of Our Lady of Matara, celebrated in September (often coinciding with the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on September 8th). The main festivities include a grand Marian procession where the miraculous statue is carried through the streets, drawing tens of thousands of people.
Coastal Serenity:
- Tranquil Location: The church is located on Beach Road, facing the Indian Ocean, which adds to its serene and contemplative atmosphere. This beautiful coastal setting makes it a peaceful sanctuary for prayer and reflection.
Centenary Landmark:
- Historical Milestone: The church building itself, formerly known as St. Mary’s Church, celebrated its centenary year in 2007, marking a century of housing and devotion to the revered statue in its current structure.
