Balangoda Ranmudu Water Fall

Descend into the emerald folds of the Ratnapura District, the legendary “City of Gems,” to discover Ranmudu Ella – The “Waterfall of the Golden Ring.” This is not just a geological wonder; it is a curtain of water steeped in the romance and tragedy of ancient Sri Lankan folklore.

The Legend and the Lore

The very name of the fall speaks of a royal past. Local villagers tell the haunting tale of a beautiful princess, the daughter of the warrior King Sitawaka Rajasinghe, who frequented the pristine pools beneath the cascade to bathe. It is said that on one occasion, her precious golden ring (ran mudu) slipped from her finger and sank into the depths of the pool. Before it could be retrieved, a massive rock tumbled from the heights, eternally pinning the ring to the riverbed.

To this day, the pure, cold water that rushes down the rock face is believed to be guarding not only the princess’s ring but also a mythical treasure chest of the King himself, protected by a fearsome demon of the water. Visitors feel the weight of this ancient history in the spray that rises from the plunge pool.

The Natural Splendor

The Cascade: Standing approximately 45 meters high, Ranmudu Ella is a magnificent sight. It is formed by a tributary of the Ranmuthu River, its waters tumbling down a vast, sheer rock formation that looks like the flank of a giant asleep.

The Experience:

  • The Royal Bathing Pool: The water gathers in a refreshing, crystal-clear pool at the base. While the depths may hold secrets, the shallows offer a safe, invigorating dip—a rare opportunity to bathe in a spot once reserved for royalty.
  • The Scenic Vistas: Nestled deep in the lush, unmarred scenery of the Balangoda region, the fall is a vision of cascading white against the dense, tropical green. The environment is a tranquil retreat, offering a sense of seclusion and raw natural beauty that is a hallmark of Sri Lanka’s interior.
  • The Lifeblood: The river that feeds the fall is vital, irrigating the nearby villages and sustaining the land, creating a verdant haven around its base.

Ranmudu Ella is an essential pilgrimage for those who seek not only the beauty of nature but the living pulse of Sri Lanka’s cultural memory. It invites you to pause, to look into the churning water, and to imagine the glitter of the lost golden ring.

Why go?

The ruins offer a spectacular glimpse into a golden age, showcasing an incredible fusion of ancient Sinhala and South Indian architectural styles. Key attractions include the impressive remnants of the Royal Palace Complex of King Parakramabahu, once seven stories high, and the elaborate Sacred Quadrangle (Dalada Maluva), which houses the island’s most concentrated collection of religious structures. Among these are the beautifully preserved circular relic house, the Polonnaruwa Vatadage, and the towering, brick-built image house, the Lankatilaka Vihara.
