Medirigiriya Vatadage
The Medirigiriya Vatadage is one of the most stunning and best-preserved examples of ancient Sinhalese architecture, a unique feature of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage. Located about 30 kilometers north of the main ruins of Polonnaruwa, this ancient circular shrine is often considered an architectural jewel of the Cultural Triangle.
A Vatadage is a circular relic house built to protect a small stupa, and the one at Medirigiriya is exceptional. It stands majestically on a small, elevated rocky outcrop, accessed by a stone staircase. The centerpiece is the beautifully restored structure featuring three concentric rings of slender, intricately carved stone pillars that once supported a wooden dome-shaped roof. These rings of pillars, along with four perfectly preserved, seated Buddha statues facing the cardinal directions, create a profound sense of symmetry and spiritual enclosure.
Dating back as far as the Anuradhapura period (with records mentioning it in the 2nd century AD) and later renovated during the Polonnaruwa Kingdom, the site was a major monastic complex. Beyond the main Vatadage, visitors can explore the ruins of an ancient hospital, a stone medicine trough (beheth oruwa), and other ruins that provide a comprehensive glimpse into the advanced civilization that thrived here. Its setting, isolated amidst a peaceful, forested dry zone, makes it a serene and less-crowded alternative to the main sites in the area, making it an excellent Polonnaruwa tourist attraction.
