Ridi Viharaya (Silver Temple)
The Ridi Viharaya, also known as the Silver Temple, is an ancient and historically significant Buddhist cave temple located near the town of Ridigama in the Kurunegala district of Sri Lanka. Its name, meaning “Silver Temple,” stems from an ancient legend that a vein of silver ore was discovered here, which was subsequently used to fund the construction of the Ruwanweliseya Dagoba in Anuradhapura by King Dutugemunu in the 2nd Century BC.
The temple complex is an exquisite example of ancient Sinhala architecture and art, built into a natural rock cave formation. Its main shrines feature magnificent artwork, including detailed frescoes and murals that date back to the Kandyan and Kandy periods, as well as unique rock-cut statues of the Buddha in various postures. One of the most famous pieces is an intricately carved ivory-hued limestone image of the Buddha.
The Ridi Viharaya is not only a place of worship but a treasure trove of art and history, showcasing the cultural brilliance of Sri Lanka’s past. The serene and sacred atmosphere, combined with the temple’s captivating legends and beautiful setting, makes it a key Kurunegala tourist attraction and a must-visit for anyone exploring the cultural triangle or the North Western Province.
